When the Olympics Has A Copyright Problem

Sports routine music (think gymnastics and ice skating) is under copyright attack. But why?

Some forms of copyright infringement actually benefit the copyright holder. Some cosplayers would argue that their dressing up as characters helps sell more games or comics or movies. One such instance we rarely think about, until now: ice skating and gymnastics routines.

Some music labels are going after professional ice skaters and gymnasts for using their music as the background to their routines — we’ve all seen it in any ice skating competition, in the floor routine at the Olympics. But why?! I mean, seriously, how is damaging your brand to have amazing athletes use your music in their routines? One argument is that there should be compensation, but allowing infringement for the benefits they provide the brand is a solid argument for not trying to ruin sports. Just in my opinion. But it is the copyright holder’s right, just one that should be thought over before taking action, IMO.
