The headline of this blog post is nothing we didn’t already know — Trump and family are selling meme coins and crypto currency to the highest bidder, accepting “investments” from foreign governments, gifts of planes by royal families, and let Elon Musk run DOGE (which essentially shut down investigations against Musk companies while ending contracts to then be taken over by Musk-linked companies). HOWEVER, two items have now crossed the copyright line, for us: (1) Within days of the U.S. Copyright publishing its AI Training recommendations, from months and months of hearings, comments, and reviews, the White House contacted the “Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter Saturday afternoon informing her that her job leading the U.S. Copyright Office had been ‘terminated'”, and this is after firing her boss too. What was the cause for firing? None given. Does the White House have the ability to fire Perlmutter? Nope, it is illegal, but that didn’t stop Trump. And (2), hidden within the first draft of a recent GOP Commerce Bill, they are trying to ban the enforcement of all AI laws that states have passed protecting their citizens, for a period of 10 years.
Now why is this significant? Because Elon Musk’s 250M towards Trump’s election must be paid back somehow. And apparently the $$$ Musk has gotten from DOGE stopping investigations and transferring government contracts wasn’t enough. Elon Musk wants to create his AI. Meta, which paid Trump 25M to settle a lawsuit that Meta had already won, wants their AI to be protected. Literally just “follow the money”, as the saying goes. Perlmutter and her coworkers are being fired because Trump doesn’t want to follow the law, he wants to sell out hard working creators so the scum who steal their work can make a profit with no regard to the law, or compensation, or even permission to use the copyrighted work. This is an affront to creators and we stand with everyone who creates their own IP from scratch and hope for a future time where we all stand together and reclaim what has been stolen from us by those who don’t have the talent to put in the work and would rather just steal it and claim they’ve done something great.
Also, it is amazing how the GOP is all about “States’s Rights” and “Free Speech” until it relates to any laws or content they disagree with. The GOP, the OG snowflakes.
